Aloysia virgata (Sweet Almond Bush)
Sweet almond bush is actually a small tree, which produces a strong, sweet fragrance of vanilla and almonds nearly year-round. It is a close relative of lemon verbena. Although the individual white flowers are quite small, they grow in spikes like a narrow version of butterfly bush (Buddleia), so they are actually fairly showy. The flowers are very attractive to butterflies and bees. Sweet almond bush grows into a tree 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide in zone 10, grows as a large shrub in zone 9, and is grown as a deciduous perennial in zone 8. It will not likely survive the winter outdoors north of zone 8. It blooms best in full sun, but otherwise is not demanding in its growing requirements. In warm winter areas, it will need pruning 2 or 3 times a year.
