Agave guiengola (Dolphin Agave)
Commonly called Dolphin Agave, this species eventually forms a 4 foot tall and 6 foot wide rosette of broad, thick leaves that are whitish or silvery blue-green. It maintains only 4-8 of these soft, tender leaves at a time, but they are enormous on a mature plant. It is extremely slow growing. After 15-25 years it will produce a tall flower spike like Century Plant and other Agaves, with flowers followed by pups. It will also produce pups from the roots throughout its life. Agave guiengola is very drought tolerant and does well in an arid climate, but it looks best with some afternoon shade. It grows naturally in sandy, rocky, limestone soil. Since it is a tropical plant, it will only survive the winter outdoors in zones 9-10.
