Abutilon pictum (Flowering Maple 'Souvenir de Bonn')
Abutilon is similar to its close relative Hibiscus, but with smaller flowers that stay somewhat bell-shaped, and more cold hardy. The variety 'Souvenir de Bonn' is a hybrid with spectacular foliage variegated green and creamy yellow-white, and salmon colored flowers with red veins. It blooms abundantly most of the year in frost-free climates. It is a fast and sturdy upright grower to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide, but pruning several times a year will keep it to whatever size and shape you prefer. It performs very well in full sun in cooler climates, but in the hottest areas it requires a bit of afternoon shade. Rich, well drained soil is best, with regular water and fertilizer. Makes a good pot plant or house plant. It is root-hardy in zone 8 and fully winter hardy in zones 9-11.
