Abutilon pictum (Flowering Maple)
Abutilon is similar to its close relative Hibiscus, but with smaller flowers that stay somewhat bell-shaped. This variety is not a hybrid, it is the species Abutilon pictum, a fast and sturdy upright grower with orange flowers that have prominent red veins. It blooms abundantly most of the year. Its natural tendency is to produce sparse growth up to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide, so pruning several times a year is essential. Some abutilons prefer a bit of shade, but this one performs very well in the full, hot sun of cental Florida. It is winter hardy in zones 9-11.
